MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography)
A new, exciting application of MRI is the study of the vessels of the body or MR Angiogram. MRA is a noninvasive alternative to standard catheter angiography. Unlike standard angiography which uses radiation and involves injecting a large amount of intravenous, iodinated contrast, MRA uses no radiation and very little, non-iodinated contrast that does not hurt or cause reactions when injected. This exam is excellent for delineating the renal arteries and aorta. The arteries and veins of the brain, neck, and vessels down the legs can be well visualized as well. This MRA exam usually takes 1-11/2 hours.
