Pediatric MRI
Small children usually require sedation of some sort for this exam. Once your child is schedules, our nurse will call the day before the procedure to discuss the exam and preparations with you.
All children undergoing MRI with sedation should not have any risk factors for aspiration and should not have any illnesses at the time of the scan. Milk, formula, or solids may be taken up to 6 hours before the administration of sedatives. Oral medications may be administered up to the time of sedation. Clear liquids may be taken up to 2 hours before the administration of sedatives. Children with a history of gastroesophageal reflux or other GI motility disorders should have nothing to eat or drink, except for medications, 6 hours prior to the procedure.
After the exam, generally if the child is awake, he/she may go home within an hour. If not fully awake or if general anesthesia was used, the child will recover for several hours in the Recovery Room before going home.
