Diagnostic Services | MRI
Preparation
MRI of Brain: No makeup please.
MRI of Abdomen or Pelvis: Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam.
All other MRI exams: No specific preparation.
If you have had prior imaging studies elsewhere, it may be helpful if you bring them with you on the day of your appointment so that we can compare the results of the current MRI with your other studies.
Nearly everybody can undergo MR imaging. However, a small group of people should not be exposed to a strong magnetic field such as people with a pacemaker or people with some types of metallic implants or object in their body, such as aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, electronic neurostimulators, or insulin pumps. Nearly all heart valves and orthopedic hardware are safe. Intravascular stents are generally safe after the first 6 weeks they have been placed. You will be screened initially by telephone and upon your arrival by the technologist and a written questionnaire. If needed, 2 plain x-rays of the eyes will be taken to look for metal.
