At present, there are no proven hazardous effects of the radio waves or magnetic fields used in MRI. The effects of MRI on an unborn fetus are not known. We generally do not perform MRI on pregnant patients, particularly in the first trimester, unless it is an emergency. In this case, we will have the patient sign a release form.

If you are breastfeeding and plan to receive intravenous contrast, it is usually not necessary to stop the feeding after the procedure. New research shows that less than 0.04% of the contrast gets into breast milk. However, if you wish, you may abstain from breastfeeding for 24 hours and that should insure that 100% of the contrast has been eliminated from the body.
